Not to worry; stains can be history, especially if you jump on them quickly.
As with any cleaner, it’s important to test vinegar on a hidden area before using it to clean the carpet. Using a damp rag, an inconspicuous area of carpet–inside a closet or in a corner, for example–can be moistened before applying the vinegar as if you were actually cleaning the area. The vinegar should be allowed to sit for a few minutes and then be blotted away. After about 24 hours, the area should be examined for color fading or changes in texture.
Carpets often require a deep cleaning treatment that a vacuum cleaner alone will not achieve. While the vacuum collects loose dirt, it does not actually clean the carpet fibers themselves. Laundry detergent is designed to clean many types of fabric, from clothing to carpeting. The detergent will actually wash the carpet, leaving it fresh and free of residue.
Remove as much excess as you can before applying a cleaning solution. For liquid spills, use a clean, white absorbent cloth to blot up excess liquid, applying pressure for about 30 seconds. Repeat until the cloth comes off the stain clean and dry. For solid messes, use a dull knife to scrape off the excess. Never use hot water to treat a stain since heat could cause the stain to permanently set into your carpet.
