If you have carpet in your home, chances are you’ve either dealt with stains in the past or will have to deal with them in the future. Different types of stains require different methods to remove. You can buy expensive carpet cleaners, but you probably have everything you need to remove stains right now in your kitchen. If you’ve currently got a stubborn stain on your carpet, these methods might be just what you need to take care of it. And if not, this is great reading for the future if one of these common stains ever does show up.
Coffee
Most of us drink coffee in the mornings, and when you first wake up, you might not be feeling super coordinated– a perfect storm for creating spills and stains. If you’ve just spilled coffee, first you should blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Once the spill is taken care of, you can then clean the area with a mixture of one tablespoon dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Apply this mixture with a clean sponge, a little at a time, and eventually, the stain should disappear.
Red Wine
Red wine stains are particularly notorious for being hard to remove. The same mixture of dish soap, white vinegar, and warm water is often used to clean red wine from a carpet. Give this a shot first, as it might work for you. If the stain still isn’t coming up, you can try the more extreme measure of applying one part dish soap and two parts hydrogen peroxide. This is a bleaching solution that will lighten the stain. You should first try this mixture on a piece of carpet that’s out of the way so that you can test whether it will stain or alter the coloring.
Permanent Marker
There are a variety of different DIY methods for removing permanent marker from your carpeting. None of them are guaranteed to work 100% of the time, but depending on the color and thickness of your carpet you may find that one works better than others. One solution is to apply rubbing alcohol to the stain. Another is to saturate it with Lysol spray and then wipe it up. Some also swear by using oil-free hairspray on the stain! If you have a magic eraser around your home, that’s a common method that usually has pretty great results.
