Top House Cleaners
The way to properly clean each type of stain or mess varies based on the type of flooring:
Spills & pet stains
Carpet: Blot with a paper towel and use eco-friendly white vinegar, which neutralizes odors due to its high acidity. If dry, sprinkle baking soda and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming.
Hardwood: Rub the spot with No. 000 steel wool and floor wax. If the area is still dark, apply bleach or vinegar and allow it to soak into the wood for about an hour. Rinse with a damp cloth.
Stone: Blot, then wipe the area using a soft cloth dipped in sudsy water, then a dry cloth with rubbing alcohol, and then a dry cloth soaked in watered-down bleach.
Vinyl: Blot, then create a mixture of vinegar, dish detergent and warm water. Dip a soft bristled brush and scrub the area. Rinse with clean water.
Oil-based stains
Carpet: Blot until no oil is left on the paper towel, then use a washcloth to blot rubbing alcohol onto the stain. Then apply dish soap and water to the stain and blot until stain is gone.
Hardwood: Rub with a soft cloth and dishwashing detergent to break down grease. Rinse with clear water. Repeat if necessary. Once dry, smooth the raised grain with fine sandpaper.
Stone: Blot, then create a poultice paste using ammonia or a degreaser. Apply paste to stain, cover with a plastic bag and allow to sit for up to 24 hours, until paste is dry. Once dry, remove by scraping and rinse the area.
Vinyl: Rub with warm water and a vinyl cleaner (make sure that it is specifically for vinyl instead of a multi-purpose cleaner). Let soak for 15-20 minutes, wipe with warm water and repeat if necessary.
Water marks or white stains
Carpet: Put mineral oil on a soft rag and rub it into the stain. Let it sit overnight and repeat if necessary.
Hardwood: Rub the spot with No. 000 steel wool and floor wax. If the stain goes deeper, lightly sand the floor and clean with fine steel wool and odorless mineral spirits.
Stone: Varies by type of natural stone.
Vinyl: Mop with a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar.
