How to Install Carpet Panels?
1. Level the subfloor using joint compound and tape. Make sure all nails are hammered in and flat or below the surface of the subfloor.
Any abnormalities in the subfloor will project themselves up through the carpet and ruin the look of the finished floor.
2. Snap a chalk line across the room from each set of opposing walls. The lines will intersect at the center of the room.
3. Dry fit a row of tiles along each chalk line. The tiles at the end of each line must not be cut smaller than half a tile width. If your dry fit leaves less than half a tile at either end of the line, shift the entire row so that a full tile touches one wall. When you shift tiles, it is also necessary to move the tiles along one chalk line so that the edges of the tiles line up evenly with each other.
4. Peel the backing off of the tile in the center of where the two rows meet and adhere it to the floor. Peel the backing from the first tile to the right and apply seam sealer along the edge of the tile that will touch the first tile. Stick the tile to the floor, butting the edges tightly against the first tile. Press down along the edges of the tile to secure it in place.
5. Install the tile immediately above the first tile in the dry fitted rows in the same manner. Install a fourth tile, applying seam sealer to the two edges that will touch the installed tiles, to complete a square in the center of the room. Butt the tile up against the two surrounding tiles tightly.
6. Install two tiles on each side of the square, matching the seam lines and butting the tiles up against the square and each other. Use the dry fitted tiles as you encounter them along the edges of the square. Install the tiles in each corner, butting them tightly up against the two surrounding tiles and matching seam lines. You now have a larger square.
7. Install the next layer of tiles around the perimeter of the large square, butting each tile up against all surrounding tiles. Continue installing tiles in this manner until you set all full-sized tiles.
8. Lay one tile on the floor upside down starting at the wall and let it overlap the last full-sized tile on the row. The carpet will face the floor and the backing will face you. Score the tile along the line where it overlaps the full sized tile. Continue scoring until you completely cut the tile.
9. Peel off the backing and apply seam sealer to all four sides of the tile. Install the cut edge along the wall of the room. The seam sealer on the cut edge of the tile will prevent unraveling of the carpet fibers. Repeat this step and the one previous for all the partial tiles that go against the edges of the room.
10. Roll the entire room with a 75-pound carpet roller to permanently bond the tile adhesive with the floor.
